An influencer who rose to fame for eating large amounts of raw unprocessed organs and meat is the subject of a new Netflix documentary.
Brian Johnson, best known by his online alias Liver King, is an American fitness social media influencer and businessman.
He lives according to the ‘nine ancestral tenants – to eat, sleep, move, shine, connect, cold, sun, fight, and bond.
With six million followers on TikTok, he’s become known for promoting what he calls an ‘ancestral lifestyle’ by eating a pound (450 grams) of raw liver each day alongside large amounts of other meat items including bone marrow and even bull testicles.
However, he’s also been slammed by nutritionists, who say he is spreading potentially dangerous misinformation due to the risks of bacterial infection, an increased risk of heart disease and high cholesterol levels, as well as an additional risk of digestive issues.

Netflix has teased of the upcoming release: ‘He built a supplement empire by devouring raw meat on social media. And he had the muscles to prove it. But, really, how did the Liver King get so huge?.’
Featuring interviews with the man himself, his family, and his business partners, Untold also unravels the wild story of the Liver King’s rapid rise to internet fame and the controversy that followed.
Speaking to Netflix’s Tudum, director Joe Pearlman shared: ‘When the Liver King burst onto my feed I, like so many, was transfixed. I wanted to find out more, who he really was and what was really going on. The truth was even crazier than I could have possibly imagined.’
‘We live in a time when someone can reach hundreds of millions of people without going through any kind of traditional gatekeeping,’ he continued.
‘No background checks: just a phone and a guy. When shock and outrage get views, what are you willing, or even able, to keep doing to stay at the top of the algorithm?’
After majoring in biochemistry studies in university, Johnson started working as a pharmaceutical rep before starting the supplement company Heart & Soil, which earns him an estimated $100 million (£75 million) a year.

He posted his first TikTok in 2021 and has since amassed millions of followers, also sharing videos of workouts that show him doing unimaginable tasks like dragging weights down his driveway with his teeth.
Despite repeatedly shutting down speculation he used steroids to gain his physique, in 2022 it was revealed he recently used them and spent $11,000 (£8,000) on pharmaceuticals each month.
He went on to issue an apology for misleading viewers about his ‘pharmacological intervention’.
Although some of his followers filed a lawsuit demanding $25 million in compensation for deception, it was later discontinued.
Untold: The Liver King is streaming from May 13 on Netflix.
