- Amazon Prime Video announces a new sequel to the iconic ‘Stargate’ franchise after a 15-year TV hiatus
- The new series will be helmed by Martin Gero, a veteran of the original ‘Stargate: Atlantis’ team
- Fans are excited for the reboot of the beloved sci-fi series, known for its massive global following
Fifteen years after the Stargate universe came to an end on TV, Amazon Prime Video has confirmed a long-awaited reboot of the popular franchise.
Sci-fi nerds everywhere rejoice, the hit 00s series (which ran for 10 seasons from 1997 to 2007 and produced a popular spin-off, Stargate Atlantis) is returning to the streamer with a sequel created by one of the original creative team players, Martin Gero.
The show – starring Richard Dean Anderson, Michael Shanks and Amanda Tapping – cultivated a mammoth following with the New York Times calling it the number one show in the UK for people aged 18-44 at the time, and drawing in 17 million viewers worldwide weekly.
It follows a secret human organisation of soldiers and scientists who travel through an ancient portal, known as the Stargate, where they encounter otherworldly enemies and allies alike.
The final spin-off, Stargate: Universe, came to a close in 2011, marking the end of an era for the MGM franchise.
Now, Amazon Prime Video has confirmed a fresh new TV series for longtime and brand new fans.
In a statement, Gero said: ‘Twenty years ago, my first real job in television was as a Story Editor on Stargate: Atlantis.
‘I spent five years at the franchise working across all three series, Stargate taught me everything about making television – it’s written into my DNA.’
He planned to ‘guide this incredible franchise into its next phase’.
‘For those who’ve kept the gate active through conventions, rewatches, and unwavering faith – this one’s for you. And for those that are new to our world – I promise you’re in for something extraordinary,’ he concluded.
Ex-show bosses Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi will also serve as consulting producers on the new series, for which details are currently under wraps.
‘Stargate is an enduring, iconic franchise that has captivated audiences for decades with its bold exploration of humanity’s place in the cosmos,’ said Nick Pepper, Head of US SVOD TV development for Amazon MGM Studios added.
Pepper promised a ‘visionary new chapter [which] honours the series’ rich legacy while propelling it into an ambitious and emotionally resonant future.’
It’s been a long wish of Stargate fans for the show to make a return to TV screens, with some dubbing it ‘one of the best sci-fi shows of all time’.
The latest addition to the universe was in the form a a web series, Origins, in 2018.
And now it looks as though their dream is finally coming true!
