The “Outlander” universe is expanding with the highly anticipated prequel series “Outlander: Blood of My Blood,” set to premiere this summer on Starz. As fans eagerly await this new chapter, showrunner Matthew B. Roberts is already sparking excitement by hinting at the possibility of a second season.Â
Unpacking the ‘Outlander’ Prequel Title and Potential
With “Outlanderâs” 8th and final season still on the horizon, the upcoming prequel offers a fresh dive into the franchiseâs rich history. The new series will focus on the parallel love stories of Jamie and Claire Fraser’s parents.
Jamie’s parents, Brian Fraser and Ellen MacKenzie, fall in love in 18th-century Scotland. While Claire’s parents, Henry Beauchamp and Julia Moriston, find love in World War I England.
The title “Outlander: Blood of My Blood” reflects the seriesâ emphasis on legacy and family ties, and Robertsâ recent comments suggest that the creative team has big plans. Unlike “Outlander,” which is rooted in Diana Gabaldonâs novels, the prequel explores relationships only briefly referenced in her books. This gives the creative team freedom to craft new narratives.
Gabaldonâs upcoming prequel novel about Brian and Ellen, along with her expansive “Outlander” universe, provides a deep well of inspiration.
Teasing Season 2 While Addressing the Loss of a Cast Member
The production of “Blood of My Blood” faced a somber challenge when actor Brian McCardie, who portrayed clan chieftain Isaac Grant, unexpectedly passed away in the spring of 2024. McCardie completed some scenes before his death, and the team chose to include his work while adjusting the storyline to honor his contribution.
While discussing these changes with Entertainment Weekly, Roberts revealed the characterâs significance. Isaac Grant is not only the head of Clan Grant, but also the father of Malcolm Grant, a potential suitor for Ellen MacKenzie.Â
âWe had planned story for [Isaac Grant] going forward. If there is going to be season 2, we would’ve planned story for him because he’s just such a powerful character,â Roberts said.
“He’s the other side of the coin of Lord Lovat. Every scene he was in, he just brought the level up and you just go, ‘Oh my god, I want to see more of him.’”
A Fresh ‘Outlander’ Cast With Some Familiar Characters
“Blood of My Blood” introduces fans to a new ensemble cast, including Harriet Slater as Ellen, Jamie Roy as Brian, Hermione Corfield as Julia, and Jeremy Irvine as Henry. The story also includes younger versions of familiar “Outlander” characters like Murtagh Fitzgibbons Fraser, Colum and Dougal MacKenzie, and Jocasta Cameron.
Designed to be accessible to newcomers, the prequel doesnât require prior knowledge of the flagship series. However, fans will definitely enjoy the connections even though OG “Outlander” cast members are not expected to appear.
Season 1 of “Outlander: Blood of My Blood” will feature 10 episodes, and the show will premiere on Starz on August 8. A premiere date for the 8th season of “Outlander” has not been announced.
