Iconic actor Patricia Arquette is paying a heartfelt tribute to another iconâ Diane Keaton, her friend, mentor, and inspiration. At the “Murdaugh: Death in the Family” premiere in New York City on October 13, Arquette opened up to People about what it was like to work with the late Oscar winner, who died on October 11 at age 79.
âShe was just so immediate, and so alive and so generous,â Arquette shared, recalling their time together on the 1991 TV movie âWildflowerâ and the CBS Schoolbreak Special âThe Girl with the Crazy Brother.â
Keatonâs Eye for Art & Her Unique Vision
Arquette remembered Keaton as not only a brilliant performer but also a gifted creative mind behind the camera. âShe had such an incredible vision for beauty and design and photography and art,â Arquette shared. âShe was just so effervescent and so alive.â
The Oscar winner admired Keatonâs authenticity and individuality, describing her as âvery much her own person.â Arquette added, âWe have very few original artists, like, real original people.â
Arquetteâs new series, “Murdaugh: Death in the Family”, premieres on October 15 on Hulu. The series stars Jason Clarke as Alex Murdaugh, with Arquette playing his wife and Johnny Berchtold as their son.
As she prepares for her next chapter, Arquette says Keatonâs influence remains close to her heart. âShe was one of those artists who made you want to be braver,â Arquette said. âShe just had that kind of light.â
Remembering Keatonâs Iconic Roles & Career

Looking back on Keatonâs extraordinary career, Arquette praised her versatility and depth. âWhat an actress,â she said. âIf you watch âRedsâ or âLooking for Mr. Goodbar,â you know? All the comedies, but also of course âAnnie Hallâ and âThe Godfather,â I mean her acting is incredible.â
Arquette admitted she was such a fan that she once skipped school to see one of Keatonâs most acclaimed films. âI used to ditch school so I could see âReds,ââ she said with a smile.
Keatonâs work in âAnnie Hallâ earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress, and she famously portrayed Kay, Al Pacinoâs onscreen wife, in all three âGodfatherâ films.
Honoring Keatonâs Life, Legacy & Family

The Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed it responded to Keatonâs home at 8:08 a.m. on Oct. 11 and transported a 79-year-old woman to a nearby hospital. Her family later confirmed her passing to People and requested privacy during this time of grief.
Throughout her life, Keatonâs love for performance began early. After studying drama in college, she made her Broadway debut in Woody Allenâs âPlay It Again, Samâ in 1969, earning a Tony nomination.
In one of her final interviews with People, Keaton reflected on her life and work. âI knew what I wanted in life, and I went after it,â she said. âBeing a person who always knew simplifies things â itâs hard to find your way if you donât.â
Keaton is survived by her two children, daughter Dexter and son Duke, whom she adopted in 1996 and 2001.
