Peter Crouch has revealed that he once made the terrible mistake of accidentally sending a dirty message to his mother-in-law.

English model Abbey Clancy, 38 and the England and Liverpool striker, 43, have been married since 2011 when they tied the knot in a lavish ceremony in Leicestershire.

The pair have frequently been open about their romantic lives and are often revealing weird stories about themselves.

From not knowing how old she is to banning her family from using the front door, Clancy has frequently spoken about her quirky habits on The Therapy Crouch, a relationship podcast hosted by the married couple.

But taking a turn to reveal a quirky story of his own, the footballer revealed an incident that was the stuff of nightmares on a recent podcast episode.

A listener asked the couple: ‘Hey, have you guys ever texted a person you were actually talking about by mistake, and how did you fix it?’

‘Yeah, I’ve done it before, nothing too major I don’t think, though.

‘Do you remember when I sent your mum a sexual message? That was horrendous,’ said Crouch.

Clancy replied: ‘Yeah, Pete was sexting my mum!’

The sporting legend clarified: ‘The beaver emoji sent straight to her mum, that was highly embarrassing, wasn’t it?’

He revealed it was not long into their relationship when this happened, only adding to the awkwardness.

‘That was early on [in our relationship] as well – when you used to reply to them.’

Clancy jokingly said it was a ‘Freudian slip,’ accusing him of sending it to ‘the person he was thinking about.’

‘No, obviously, I meant to text you, but I texted your mum. I’m not trying it on with your mum, not at any point. Let’s move on.’

In a previous episode of the podcast, Clancy spoke about meeting Crouch for the first time and choosing to keep it a secret from her family.

‘I don’t know why I was being so secretive. I think because I was so young and I was embarrassed to tell my mum I was going on a date.

‘My dad is the biggest Liverpool fan on Earth, but I remember telling them when we had a few dates and he went ballistic. He was like, “I can’t believe you are going out with a football player. It is such a bad look”.’

The couple met in a nightclub in Liverpool in 2006 when Crouch was playing for Liverpool. In an interview from 2019 with Radio X, the footballer revealed their hilarious first meeting.

He shared that they got on ‘fantastically well’, explaining: ‘She gave me her number – amazingly – she went away and I just carried on with my evening, and I should have known then, but I was talking to someone else who was also female.’

‘She came over and said, “Look at you! Who do you think you are?” as if we were married already.’

He joked: ‘She went mental! And I was like ‘I’m only talking’. I should have known then!’

In 2009 the pair got engaged and they tied the knot in 2011. They are now parents to four children, two boys and two girls,  aged between 13 and five.

New episodes of The Therapy Crouch are released every week.
