Rami Malek Brought to Tears by Heartwarming 8-Minute Cannes Standing Ovation

Rami Malek, 'The Man I Love'

Rami Malek was overwhelmed on Wednesday as he received an eight-minute standing ovation in Cannes for his incredible work in Ira Sachs’ “The Man I Love.”

In the film, Malek plays Jimmy, an actor who is battling AIDs. Set in the late 1980s in New York, Malek’s character faces his own mortality, having suffered a case of pneumonia that almost killed him. He recovers with the story following his theater piece.

“This is a film about what we can bring to each other through art, through love, through pain, through memory,” Sachs said after the screening, per Variety. “And I hope there are some memories we share from this evening for the festival and our love of cinema.”

Along with Malek, the film stars Tom Sturridge, Rebecca Hall, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.

Fans React To Rami Malek’s Powerful Moment

“THE MAN I LOVE features what is quite easily the best performance of Rami Malek’s career, for me, as an actor coming to terms with the possible end of his life while preparing for one final performance. I’ve never seen Malek this emotionally vulnerable, struggling through the pain to remain the man everyone knows and loves rather than giving in to despair. One scene where he sings at a party for his family is so heartbreaking and totally eclipses anything he did in “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Through Ira Sachs’ queer lens, it’s a vivid snapshot of 1980s New York, alive with music, romance, and the fluidity of human connection. Yet for a film so full of life and love, there’s also a lingering cloud of sadness hanging over it, making it feel seemingly inviting but somehow still slightly detached,” Entertainment Awards writer Matt Negila expressed.

“One of the greatest talents we have alive today. Rami Malek is🔥,” one person commented.

“Ira Sachs’s THE MAN I LOVE is gorgeous. Set during the AIDS crisis, it isn’t only about surviving, but spiritually thriving through art & a community of artists. Stylish, profound, devastating. Also: Sachs might be the first filmmaker who knew exactly what to do w/ Rami Malek,” another person wrote.
