Reese Witherspoon Reveals Why She Will ‘Never Forget’ Diane Keaton

The world is mourning the loss of an icon and entertainment industry great. Diane Keaton passed away on Sunday, October 11, at the age of 79. She died from bacterial pneumonia. In the weeks since her passing, social media has been flooded with tributes from fans and celebrities whose lives she touched. Among the tributes was one from Reese Witherspoon, who was left deeply saddened by the death of a woman who had such a tremendous impact on her life. 

Reese Witherspoon Remembers Diane Keaton

In an interview with The Times of London, published on Saturday, October 25, Witherspoon reflected on Keaton and how she helped her as a young actress. The two worked together on the 1991 movie, “Wildflower,” which Keaton directed. Witherspoon played one of the lead roles, taking on the character of Ellie Perkins.  

“She just really took a chance on me,” Witherspoon recalled in her interview, Parade reports. “You never forget those people who give you your first job opportunities.” Witherspoon also affectionately referred to Keaton as being “like an auntie” to her and praised her for being “truly original.”

This is not the first time that Witherpoon has shared what Keaton meant to her. However, her new comments do highlight the tremendous impact that Keaton had on her life. Despite having an incredible career herself, Witherpoon is grateful for how she was treated as a young star. 

Reese Witherspoon Celebrates Diane Keaton’s Uniqueness

On October 12, the day after Keaton’s death was announced, Witherspoon posted a video on Instagram of herself speaking about the “Something’s Gotta Give” actress. She addressed her death and how it impacted her. Witherspoon referred to Keaton as one of her “first mentors in this business” and recalled how, when she was 15, she interviewed for a role in Keaton’s movie and how kind she was to her. 

Witherspoon praised Keaton for being “incredible and indelible and just truly an original person.” In her speech, she also encouraged the audience to watch one of Keaton’s films and be inspired by her unique outfits to live as their most authentic and interesting selves. “Diane Keaton changed the way we all saw women on screen – smart, funny, stylish, and completely original,” she wrote in the caption. “I’m so grateful to have had her as a mentor.”

At the time of he post, Witherspoon’s words were celebrated by fans and fellow celebrities. Kerry Washington reacted to the post, writing, “Love this. And you.” Candace Cameron Bure also reacted. “Loved hearing this story. Thank you for sharing it,” she wrote.
