Returnal dev teases new game announcement on anniversary of original

Returnal – anything new by Housemarque is good news (pic: Sony)

Housemarque has implied they will reveal their next game tomorrow and yet they’ve previously stated they have no plans for Returnal 2.

As far as we’re concerned, Returnal is the best PlayStation 5 exclusive so far and one of the best games of this entire generation. It wasn’t massively successful though and developer Housemarque has made it clear that a sequel will not be their next game. So… what is it they’re teasing for Tuesday?

The tweet below is all the information we have to go on: a black and white image of what appear to be a female pair of eyes, peering through some smashed glass and accompanied by the word ‘tomorrow’.

There’s nothing to rule out the idea that it’s Returnal 2, which does have a female protagonist, plus the announcement will be made on April 30 – which is the third anniversary of the original game’s release.

Ordinarily, that would be a fairly obvious clue that Housemarque is about to announce a follow-up, the problem being that they already said their next game is another original IP.

As much as we love Returnal we wouldn’t want to discourage that, plus there’s an additional problem: Returnal director Harry Krueger left the company last November.

Plans can change, but Housemarque seemed pretty clear about their intentions back in 2022, when they purposefully avoided the question of whether the new game is a live service title or not.

At that point, it was still Sony’s goal to have 12 first party live service games by 2026, but so far they’ve not released a single one (Helldivers 2 was by a third party developer).

Since Sony has never explained itself, it’s unclear whether they’re still fixated on forcing all their internal developers to make live service games or if, like Naughty Dog, Housemarque might have been let off the hook.

Given Returnal’s ending was entirely open to interpretation, there’s plenty of scope for a sequel but even if it’s the next game after whatever’s announced tomorrow, Housemarque have still never given any commitment to a follow-up.
