While Gilmore Girls definitely had its share of viewers during its initial 2000 to 2007 run, it’s one of those rare shows that became even more popular after it ended. In 2023, old and new fans streamed the show on Netflix for over 500 million hours.
Fans clamored for original showrunner and writer Amy Sherman-Palladino to bring the show back and give it a proper final season and ending. In 2016, they got their wish with Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. But the cliffhanger just left everyone unsatisfied and demanding more. While Sherman-Palladino hasn’t said anything definitive, Scott Patterson and Lauren Graham have some ideas.
Gilmore Girls Star Teases Future for Luke and Lorelai: ‘There’s Always a Way’
Patterson, who played Luke Danes, thinks the show has stood the test of time because of how good it was. “This little show that started out as this little quality show with this great writing went on 25 years later to be embraced by the entire world, that transcends language and has such a positive effect on people,” he said.
While he admits he doesn’t know if a future is planned for Gilmore Girls, he knows it’s what people are hoping for. “Another iteration of the episodes or a Christmas special would…actually make a lot of sense. I think that’s a really smart way to go about it. I haven’t heard anything, I don’t know anything, but that sounds like a very feasible, very doable idea there,” Patterson told CT Insider.
And where might our favorite diner owner and coffee fiend be if Gilmore Girls returned? Patterson envisions Luke and Lorelai as grandparents. It is not surprising, given that the last words of A Year in the Life are from Rory Gilmore (Alexis Bledel) telling Lorelai that she is pregnant.
“I think there’s always a way to tell more story between Luke and Lorelai,” He said. “I just think they remain the same, and I think that’s why people love those characters so much, is that they’re with each other, they’re for each other and it will never be otherwise.”
Lauren Graham Has A Simple Answer When Asked if Sheâd Bring Back âGilmore Girlsâ
Whenever she’s asked if wants to bring Gilmore Girls back, Graham never hesitates in her answer. “Yes, I always say yes because it’s my favorite character,” she said on The Drew Barrymore Show. “For me to go back, I was on a cloud. It was pure joy.”
She also told Barrymore that she talked to Amy Sherman-Palladino about bringing it back for a holiday special, as many British shows have done. “You have a season of a show that you’ve loved, like Downton Abbey was one for me. And then they do, like, a Downton Abbey Christmas.”
“So you get to visit your characters, but it’s not a whole reboot of the whole thing,” she added. “So that is my idea that has been sanctioned by no one,” she joked.
