He was acquitted of the major charges, including racketeering conspiracy and two counts of sex trafficking. However, he was found guilty on two counts of transporting individuals across state lines for prostitution. After roughly three days of deliberation by a panel of 12 jurors, Combs collapsed to his knees in relief as the verdict was read. However, Combs’ family still reportedly looked disappointed despite the news. Here’s what a reporter on the case explained.

Not-Guilty Verdict Won’t Shield Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs From Lawsuits, Principal Attorney Explains

Despite being acquitted of the most serious charges, Sean “Diddy” Combs will remain behind bars following the verdict. On July 2, 2025, the court found Combs guilty on two counts of violating the Mann Act — transporting individuals across state lines for illicit purposes — while clearing him of racketeering and sex trafficking charges. Although his legal team immediately requested bail pending sentencing, Judge Arun Subramanian denied the motion. The judge cited Combs’s “longstanding pattern of coercive behavior and potential flight risk.” The decision ensures Combs will stay in custody until his sentencing hearing, scheduled for Oct. 3, 2025. While he avoided a potential life sentence, the convictions still carry up to 20 years combined.

Law&Crime correspondent Elizabeth Millner spoke to Jesse Weber about the judge’s decision. She expressed that Combs’ family looked slightly disappointed to see that Combs would not head back to his home immediately after the verdict.

“So, I did see kind of a little disappointment from both Sean Combs and his family after the judge made his decision,” Millner said. ” … [The judge] said bail is denied because the government correctly noted that detention is mandatory, and it’s not appropriate for Sean Combs to be released on bail given the charges that he’s still been convicted of.”

What will Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ sentencing look like?

Sean “Diddy” Combs’ ultimate sentence after the verdict will hinge on how the judge weighs the severity of his actions, his history, and the guidelines in play. Law&Crime reporter Elizabeth Millner discussed what sentencing could look like. The defense is advocating for a much lesser sentence than the government has in mind.

“What the defense was advocating for was anywhere between the guidelines of 21 to 27 months behind bars,” Millner explained. “If you think about Sean Combs and his time that he served, he’s nearly at a year. So, if the judge were to go for the defense’s route, he could be out within a year. Whereas the government was like, ‘OK, no. Under the guidelines, it’s really 51-61 months.’ From the government’s point of view, it seems there is kind of a disagreement as to how long the defendant should serve, as far as his time goes.”

O.J. Simpson’s attorney called the acquittal ‘highly unusual’

Robert Shapiro, one of the lead attorneys for O.J. Simpson in the 1995 murder trial, praised Sean “Diddy” Combs’ defense team following the verdict.

“The defense team did a terrific job on a case the U.S. Attorney overcharged,” Shapiro told <a href=”https://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/diddys-dream-team-avoided-disaster-one-key-move-oj-simpson-attorney-says” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Fox News Digital. “An acquittal in Federal Court is highly unusual. Congratulations to Mark and Tenny for building an incredible group of talented lawyers.”

Shapiro noted that the defense made a smart play by not putting Combs on the witness stand. “[The defense] got a partial victory, but an almost complete victory, so I commend them for excellent work,” he continued.
