Veteran Hollywood star Sigourney Weaver has revealed how she once pushed back against the highly successful director James Cameron as she stood up for a younger performer. The actress explained that she confronted the filmmaker as she felt that all actors should stick up for each other.
Sigourney Weaver Confronted James Cameron in Defense of A Fellow Member of the Cast
During an interview with the New York Times, Weaver recalled the time she stood up to Cameron while they filmed the 1986 sequel âAliens.âÂ
This marked the first time the pair had worked together, with Weaver previously playing her character Ripley in âAlienâ under the stewardship of Ridley Scott. The director was new to the franchise and understandably wanted to make his own mark. However, this occasionally led to animosity on set.
In one encounter, Cameron lost his temper with a younger actress who was struggling to perform with the film’s props, promoting Weaver to come to her defense.
She said, âI sort of trundled up to him and I said, âYou know, when you yell at an actor, you yell at all of us, so understand that what she was doing actually was very hard. Maybe shoot something else while she gets used to doing this stuff the way you want it.â
To his credit, the filmmaker heeded the advice and the pair didn’t come to blows. In fact, Weaver saw a softer side to him after the shoot finished and became more friendly towards each other. âHeâs a good guy. I really do think Jim has mellowed,â she explained.
âHe hadnât been like that directing. He was wildly funny, witty. I can understand why that guy couldnât come out during âAliens,â because that was a tough shoot, especially for him. Letâs put it this way: Iâm glad I wasnât shooting âThe Abyssâ with him.â
James Cameron Praises Sigourney Weaver for âAvatarâ Performance
Ahead of the release of Cameron’s upcoming film âAvatar: Fire and Ash,â the director showed how close the pair have become as he praised her performance in portraying such a young character at her age.
âShe was 70 and 71 across that period where she was capturing Kiri,â Cameron explained. âI mean, she can capture Kiri tomorrow. Nothingâs changed. Sheâs a little bit older now, but she just came in a different person. She came in lighter and more open. I mean, she literally looked like she had gotten younger.â
He continued saying that Weaverâs performance as a teenage character was âmaybe one of the biggest acting challenges of her career.â
Cameron elaborated, âBecause in her mind, she had taken herself back to her 14, 15-year-old self. And by the way, it wasnât all fun and light. It was the darkness of an anxious teenager.â
