A VR streamer has taken video game immersion to the next level, by using a haptic feedback suit to convert in-game damage into real life pain.
Video games have the power to transport you to dangerous scenarios without any of the consequences (i.e. death), but what if you did feel pain when you took an arrow to the knee?
That reality now exists, thanks to Skyrim VR streamer GingasVR, who has built an elaborate VR setup using a HTC Vive headset, three Vive trackers (to replicate her movements), fans with smart plugs to reflect the in-game temperature, a haptic vest to simulate pain through vibrations, and a mod so she can speak with in-game characters using her voice.
The whole setup, which cost over $15,000 (£12,000) in total, received a new addition last week, in the form of a second haptic feedback suit, that gives you an electric shock when you take in-game damage.
‘It shocks you with electricity depending on what happens in a game,’ GingasVR explains in the video on TikTok. ‘It’s very painful.’
This suit goes underneath another haptic suit, which produces vibrations to experience other parts of Skyrim’s world, like when you take a drink or eat some food, for example.
To add some extra unpredictability to Skyrim’s world, GingasVR added a dead-eyed OpenAI non-playable character to interact with too – who is very impressed by her quest for pain.

The addition of real shocks makes every combat encounter, and jumps from a ledge, far more intense. It all culminates with a showdown against a dragon, which ends in fire, screams and err… chaotic blasts from an assault rifle mod.
GingasVR has amassed over 620,000 followers on TikTok from her VR videos, with the clip of her new set-up earning over 1.5 million views. You can check out the footage below.
The VR version of Skyrim was released back in 2017. Developer Bethesda is currently working on sequel The Elder Scrolls 6, which is rumoured to launch in 2028.
