“Sons of Anarchy” creator Kurt Sutter is offering new insight into the future of the franchise, including the possibility of a long-discussed prequel.
In an interview with Deadline, Sutter addressed ongoing fan interest in expanding the âSons of Anarchyâ universe and made it clear that the idea remains under consideration.
â[FX Networks Chairman] John Landgraf and I were always friends while I worked with him, but weâve become really close friends since I left, and thatâs been powerful for me,â Sutter said. âI know that he loves the IP, and I trust John. When I know itâs the right time for it, and it all makes sense, thatâs when itâll happen.â
Sutter added, âWhen we have lunch, weâll talk about the business and work, but itâs never about the pursuit of a single project. But look, I think there are still some stories to tell, and it would be fantastic to come back and be able to do that. I donât think itâs completely off the table, but as things change, you embrace whatever direction youâre taken in.â
âSons of Anarchyâ Prequel Idea Continues to Draw Interest
The potential prequel Sutter referenced would explore the origins of the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club, also known as SAMCRO, including how John Teller formed the group after returning from Vietnam.
The story would also examine how the club evolved over time, including the roles of younger versions of Gemma Teller and Clay Morrow. Other key storylines would include the circumstances surrounding John Tellerâs death and the origins of the journals that later shaped the original series.
âSons of Anarchy,â which aired from 2008 to 2014, followed the activities of an outlaw motorcycle club operating in a fictional California town. The series ran for seven seasons and later led to the spinoff “Mayans M.C.,” which concluded after season 5 in July 2023.
Cast Members Have Also Teased New âSons of Anarchyâ Projects
In addition to Sutterâs comments, members of the original cast have also suggested that new projects connected to the franchise could be in development.
In August 2024, Theo Rossi, who played Juice Ortiz, spoke about the possibility of a reunion involving former cast members, including Charlie Hunnam.
âThere might be something coming up where we’re all back together, which is insane,â Rossi said during a panel discussion, via ScreenRant. âIf it happens, it’s wild, but if it doesn’t it would be perfect and really cool because we also talk every day.â
Hunnam has also previously discussed a separate project connected to the âSons of Anarchyâ universe, though he noted it was in early development.
âThereâs something in that universe that doesnât involve Jax Teller, but does involve me that weâre sort of cooking up,â Hunnam said in a 2022 interview with Digital Fix. âBut right now, itâs like weâre at the stage where the ingredients are just being measured out, theyâre not even being mixed out in the bowl yet, and theyâre definitely not in the oven.â
While details remain limited, comments from both Sutter and the cast suggest that multiple ideas related to the franchise have been discussed.
Kurt Sutter and Katey Sagal Announce New Collaboration
As Sutter discusses the future of âSons of Anarchy,â he is also working on a new project with his wife, Katey Sagal (aka Gemma Teller on SOA).
The pair have launched âKhorus Harmonia,â a limited-run choral concert conceived and led by Sagal, with Sutter handling the book and staging.
Sagal described the project as a personal and creative endeavor.
âMusic and singing centers me,â she said. âMakes me feel whole in broken times.â
She also spoke about collaborating with Sutter.
âKurt loves challenging the artistic boundaries of any medium. We both crave the connection of community. Thatâs why we are doing this.â
