Stephen Colbert’s ‘Late Show’ Replacement Revealed

“The Late Show” franchise will be coming to an end very soon on CBS.

Last year, the network announced that the beloved show, which is currently hosted by popular comedian Stephen Colbert, will be ending in May 2026, with the final episode specifically set for May 21.

“We consider Stephen Colbert irreplaceable and will retire ‘The Late Show’ franchise at that time,” CBS said in a July 2025 announcement. “We are proud that Stephen called CBS home. He and the broadcast will be remembered in the pantheon of greats that graced late-night television.”

What Will Be Taking Over The Slot On CBS?

Following the end of the Late Show, CBS will air “Comics Unleashed With Byron Allen” in the 11:35 p.m slot, which will begin on May 22. Another show produced by Allen, “Funny You Should Ask,” will then air at  12:35 a.m.

“I created and launched Comics Unleashed 20 years ago so my fellow comedians could have a platform to do what we all love — make people laugh,” Allen said in a statement (per The Hollywood Reporter). “I truly appreciate CBS’ confidence in me by picking up our two-hour comedy block of Comics Unleashed and Funny You Should Ask, because the world can never have enough laughter.”

What’s Next For Stephen Colbert

Colbert is wasting no time, getting started with another major project as his show is set to end.

In an announcement at the end of March, it was revealed that Colbert and his son are developing a brand new “Lord of the Rings” movie, with the studio announcing the news on social media.

“You know what the books mean to me, and what your films mean to me,” Colbert said at the time of the announcement. “But the thing I found myself reading over and over again were the six chapters early on in [‘The Fellowship of the Ring’] that y’all never developed into the first movie back in the day. It’s basically the chapter ‘Three Is Company’ [Chapter III] through ‘Fog on the Barrow-Downs’ [Chapter VIII]. And I thought, ‘Oh, wait, maybe that could be its own story that could fit into the larger story. Could we make something that was completely faithful to the books while also being completely faithful to the movies that you guys had already made?’”

Colbert will be working with filmmaker Peter Jackson on the project, with the comedian joking that it “took me a few years for me to scrape my courage into a pile to give you a call.”
