Suzanne Somers’ Widower Finds Romance with Late Wife’s Co-Star

Suzanne Somers’ widower Alan Hamel revealed he has found romance again after her 2023 death.

Hamel confirmed to Page Six on Wednesday, June 25, that he is dating actress Joanna Cassidy, who was previously a co-star with Somers in the 1985 miniseries “Hollywood Wives.”

The 89-year-old told the outlet he knew her years before the filming of the show.

“I have known Joanna Cassidy for over 45 years,” Hamel told the outlet. “Joanna was a guest star on [daytime talk show] ‘The Alan Hamel Show’ in Canada in the ’70s.”

He added she was a great guest, but it was purely platonic. When Cassidy was filming with Somers, their paths crossed yet again.

He described the interactions as being “very cordial.”

Hamel’s Son Played Matchmaker

The Canadian producer told the outlet his son ended up meeting Cassidy while attending a film screening.

He had no idea the two already knew each other and ended up suggesting that Cassidy meet his dad.

The two ended up meeting, and Hamel shared the funny interaction between their reunion while speaking with Fox News.

“We got together and I told Joanna I’d never been with an 80-year-old,” Hamel told the outlet.

Cassidy had a funny retort to his comment. He added, “She replied that she’d never been with an 89-year-old. But it was certainly age appropriate.”

Hamel expressed his happiness at having found Cassidy while discussing the new relationship with Page Six.

“I’m fortunate to have Joanna in my life. Most men would love to have a Joanna in their life,” he said.

While Hamel said he does not know where the relationship might lead, he praised his late wife for their family.

“I do not know where this relationship is going, but what I do know is that being in the cocktail hour of my life, I am blessed with a magnificent family — thanks to incredible Suzanne — a privileged life, and our business that we created 50 years ago,” he concluded.

Hamel Previously Said Somers Urged Him to Find Happiness

Hamel previously stated he spoke with Somers about dating after her passing. He spoke with PEOPLE on the anniversary of her death in October 2024 and recalled the conversation.

“When we knew the end was near, and we had those conversations [about dating], and I use the word ‘those’ advisedly, and she said to me, ‘Live your life.’ And we both knew what that meant,” Hamel recalled.

He added, “‘Live your life,’ she said, ‘Don’t spend a lot of time moping around. Live your life.’ And so I hear those words echoing over and over again.”

The two were married for 46 years when she died.

Somers died at the age of 76 on Oct. 15, 2023, after losing her battle with an aggressive form of breast cancer.
