Take-Two shutting down Kerbal Space Program 2 and OlliOlli developers

The latest games industry layoffs have seen indie studios Roll7 and Intercept Games shut down, with the fate of Kerbal Space Program 2 uncertain.

With most publishers having recently announced their full year financial results, for the moment the constant stream of job layoffs, that have affected almost every company in the industry and seen thousands of developers lose their jobs, have abated. But they have not stopped entirely.

Until recently, Take-Two Interactive, which owns both Rockstar Games and AA publisher Private Division, had not announced any layoffs, but last month they confirmed they were cutting 5% of their global staff – which works out at around 550 people.

Now, it’s reported that they have closed both London-based developer Roll7 and American studio Intercept Games. Roll7 is best known for the OlliOlli skateboarding games, as well as future sports title Rollerdrome. Intercept Games is the team behind the Kerbal Space Program series, with the sequel still only in early access.

Both Roll7 and Intercept were independent studios before they were acquired by Take-Two and it’s unclear whether staff will attempt to return to that status, but it’s reported that Roll7 is to close entirely.

Intercept seems destined for the same fate, with other staff at Private Division also set to lose their jobs.

Take-Two has only partially acknowledged the closures, telling Bloomberg that it is ‘not providing additional details’ and that it will continue to make updates to Kerbal Space Program 2.

How that can happen without the developer is unclear, but it now seems unlikely that it will ever progress to a full release.

It’s believed that around 50 people worked at Roll7 and around 70 at Intercept Games, although Take-Two has not confirmed those details.

It’s likely that layoffs at other divisions and studios within Take-Two will become evident in subsequent days, as staff discuss their fate on social media.

As part of the initial announcement, of 5% of staff being cut, it was confirmed that ‘several projects that are in development’ have been cancelled, but it’s still not clear what they were.

Obviously, GTA 6 has not been cancelled but Rockstar is unlikely to be immune to the layoffs, even if they’re less affected than other parts of the company.
