Unless you’ve been living under a pop culture rock, you’ll know that Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce tied the knot at New York’s Madison Square Garden this July.
The celebrity wedding of the year (if not century) was steeped in secrecy, with guests reportedly receiving watermarked invites, signing non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) and handing over their phones upon arrival.
All in, the OTT nuptials are thought to have cost between $30 and $40 million, with the bride and groom forking out for the venue and infrastructure, security, florals and decor, and custom attire and production.
For a couple collectively worth $2.19 billion (Taylor’s stake is an eye-watering $2.1 billion), it was probably barely noticeable.
However, Taylor is now reportedly worried that her unimaginable wealth has made her unrelatable to the average person.
And, when you consider the average US wedding costs around $34,200 to $36,000 (in the UK, it’s a lower £20,604 to £21,990), it kind of makes sense.
This claim comes from a new report from Rob Shuter’s Naughty But Nice Substack. It alleges Taylor is reluctant to release her wedding images because she doesn’t want to appear ‘out of touch’ while many regular Americans struggle with inflation and rising living costs.
A source reportedly told Shuter, the British-American journalist and gossip columnist: ‘Taylor has spent years building a connection with ordinary fans, and she knows those pictures could change the conversation overnight.’
In terms of Taylor’s worries now, the source claimed that, ‘instead of celebrating her marriage,’ the pop star thinks ‘people could be questioning her wealth, her spending and whether she still understands how the rest of America lives.’
However, another source reportedly told Shuter that Taylor and Travis are keeping their wedding photos private as part of a larger strategy.
They suggested: ‘Taylor understands that controlling the image is part of protecting the brand. Sometimes, what you choose not to show the world becomes a bigger story than anything you reveal.’
Whichever side you’re on, there’s also no denying that Taylor and Travis’ wedding hooked the world twice over, both in terms of its secrecy and the pure extravagance.
So, when a few celebrity guests finally shared snippets of the big day, fans were seated.
For example, Greg James admitted on his breakfast show back in July that he ‘still can’t quite believe that it happened.’
He said: ‘It does feel like an amazingly strange but exciting dream. It was unbelievably fun. The main headline is: oh my god it was really fun.’
Later on his show, Greg confirmed that Taylor and Travis ‘were having a great time, they looked amazing, they were on the dancefloor.’
And, in terms of the order of the day, Greg said that it ‘wasn’t a sit-down dinner.’ Rather, the couple opted for a buffet with food from a string of their favourite New York City restaurants.
Meanwhile, Good Morning America host George Stephanopoulos said the wedding was ‘as intimate as it could possibly be, given that it was Madison Square Garden.
‘It’s hard to imagine that a place that big with such stars could feel so personal,’ he commented.
And Donna Kelce, the mother of the groom, called her son’s wedding ‘magical.’
