Teen Breakout Star Owen Cooper Wins Gotham TV Award for ‘Adolescence’

Owen Cooper, just 15 years old, is already making waves in the TV world. The young British actor won Outstanding Supporting Performance in a Limited Series at the Gotham TV Awards in New York City for his breakout role as Jamie Miller in Netflix’s “Adolescence”.

As per a report in Vogue, Cooper beat out around 500 other hopefuls to play the teenage murder suspect. He tied for the award with actress Jenny Slate from “Dying For Sex”.

While accepting his award, Cooper turned the spotlight on his “Adolescence” co-star, Erin Doherty, who was also nominated in the same category.

“(The) main person that I have to thank is Erin, who is also nominated for this award. That episode that we did together, it was easy to do it with you and it was such an honour to share this, share this award with you. You deserve this award just as much as I do, so round of applause for Erin please,” he said, prompting applause from the audience.

He also gave thanks to the cast and crew, especially director Philip Barantini and co-creator and star Stephen Graham, before closing with a cheeky line: “Who else, my parents for creating me. Yeah, but that’s about it. Thanks to Gotham Awards for handing me this award.”


“Adolescence” Takes Home Big Wins

Adolescence had a big night at the Gotham Awards, winning three out of four nominations. Along with Cooper’s award, the show won Breakthrough Limited Series and Outstanding Lead Performance for Stephen Graham.

The four-part Netflix drama has sparked national conversations around incel culture and online misogyny.

One standout episode features a powerful one-take scene between Cooper’s character and a clinical psychologist, played by Erin Doherty.


What’s Next for Owen Cooper?

Cooper has already received the Breakthrough Award at the IndieWire Honors, and critics believe he’s a strong contender for the upcoming Emmy Awards. As the success of Adolescence continues, his glorious journey seems to be just getting started.

With Emmy nominations just around the corner on Tuesday, July 15, all eyes are on Owen Cooper. As per a report in The Independent, industry watchers say the 15-year-old is a strong contender for a Best Supporting Actor nod—an honor that, if he wins, would make him the youngest male recipient in the award’s history.
