The 12 Craziest Met Gala Outfits Ever

The Met Gala 2025, is set to be held tonight, Monday, May 5, 2025, to raise funds for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, with dozens of stars prepped to hit the red carpet in show-stopping custom fashions. Celebrities will show off designs inspired by the Met Costume Institute’s spring exhibition, titled “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” at tonight’s event. 

With stars like Zendaya, Rhianna, Colman Domingo and Doechii set to make an appearance, the typical questions are rearing their heads – Who will be best dressed? Who will nail the theme? And who will wear the craziest outfit of the night?

In preparation for the 2025 Met Gala, here are the 12 craziest looks to ever grace the Met Gala red carpet.

Sarah Jessica Parker Dons Headpiece Featuring Full Nativity Scene

“Sex in the City” star Sarah Jessica Parker appeared as a guest at the 2018 Met Gala wearing a custom Dolce & Gabbanna gown. The gilded floor-length dress featured a lengthy train as well as an ornate gold headpiece that contained an entire nativity scene. The outfit’s religious undertones were a perfect fit for the event’s theme “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.”

Also in attendance at the 2018 Met Gala was pop-star Katy Perry. Dressed by Versace for the religion-themed event, Perry appeared in a gold dress topped off with massive, glitter-topped angel wings and matching thigh high boots.

The 2019 Met Gala was centered around the theme “Camp: Notes on Fashion” inspired by Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay “Notes on ‘Camp’.” The theme generated plenty of over-the-top looks, including one from “Tron: Ares” star Jared Leto. The actor and musician appeared on the red carpet in a silky red gown designed by Gucci. Complete with shoulder pads, the outfit similarly featured a jewel encrusted body chain and, most shockingly, a cast of Leto’s own head!

Katy Perry Doubles Down in Two Campy Looks

Back again for the 2019 Met Gala, Katy Perry joined forces with Italian luxury fashion house Moschino to serve not one but two looks for the event. For the red carpet Perry appeared dressed as a crystal chandelier before swapping the outfit for a bedazzled hamburger costume for the after party.

Perhaps one of the most dramatic red carpet appearances of the 2019 Met Gala belonged to Lady Gaga as the “Abracadabra” singer appeared in a massive hot pink dress with a 25-foot train and a team of dancers. As she walked the carpet, her designer, Brandon Maxwell, helped Gaga strip down to reveal an additional three outfits hidden beneath the first, including a corseted black gown with opera gloves and a bright pink column dress with jewels from Tiffany & Co before revealing a crystal-studded bra and panties as the final layer.

At the same time that she was appearing on Amazon’s “Carnival Row,” Cara Delevingne took to the red carpet at the 2019 Met Gala in custom Dior fashions. The actress sported a rainbow-striped dress, a glittery rainbow cane, and an over-the-top headpiece complete with wrapped candy eyeballs, bananas, orchids, and dentures. 

Billy Porter Defies Gravity in Egyptian-Inspired Outfit

“Pose” star Billy Porter similarly delivered on the ‘camp’ theme at the 2019 Met Gala as he arrived carried on an ancient Egyptian litter by six shirtless men. Porter’s “Sun God” inspired outfit, designed by Phillipe Blond of The Blonds, featured a bejeweled catsuit, 10-foot wings, and a 24-karat gold headpiece. Porter similarly sported custom gold-leafed Giuseppe Zanotti shoes and jewels by Andreoli.

At 51-years-old, Celine Dion was one of the oldest attendees of the 2019 Met Gala, but that didn’t stop the Canadian singer from stunning audiences in her custom Oscar de la Renta bodysuit. Despite dripping in feet of glittering fringe, the craziest part of the ensemble was a 22-pound feathered headpiece balanced atop Dion’s head.

Kim Kardashian Goes Incognito to the 2021 Met Gala

At the 2021 Met Gala, actress and influencer Kim Kardashian kept audiences guessing when she appeared arm in arm with a mystery man on the red carpet. The event, themed around the Met’s “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” exhibit, saw Kardashian appear in a head-to-toe black outfit designed by Balenciaga that completely obscured her features. The star’s guest, who appeared in a matching black hoodie and mask, was later revealed to be Balenciaga Creative Director Demna Gvasalia.

While pregnant with the second child for rapper A$AP Rocky, Rhianna appeared on the red carpet at the 2023 Met Gala. Inspired by the gala’s theme, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” Rhianna appeared in a flower-covered hooded gown designed by Valentino. The Fenty Beauty founder’s look similarly featured a pair of white sunglasses topped with false eyelashes and a bold red lip.

The 2024 Met Gala saw actress Mindy Kaling appear in a structural blush-pink floral gown from avant-garde Indian designer Gaurav Gupta. The three-dimensional gown was titled “The Melting Flower of Time,” a perfect fit for the gala’s theme, “Garden of Time,” inspired by the Costume Institute’s “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” exhibition. Kaling similarly attended the Met Gala on-screen in the 2018 film “Ocean’s 8” alongside Sandra Bullock, Anne Hathaway, and Rhianna. 

Cardi B Becomes a Black Rose for 2024 Met Gala

Rapper Cardi B has never been shy when it comes to serving an avant-garde look on the red carpet, as she proved at the 2024 Met Gala when she appeared in a massive black tulle gown designed by the emerging fashion label Windowsen. The off-the-shoulder gown featured a matching black headwrap, a sweeping train, and turquoise jewelry designed by Kamyen. Cardi B’s stylist Kollin Carter later revealed that the gown was inspired by a black rose.
