Sydney Sweeney is stepping into one of her most psychologically charged roles yet with The Housemaid, the upcoming film adaptation of Freida McFadden’s bestselling novel, The Housemaid. Set to bring the story’s twist-heavy suspense from page to screen, the movie follows a young woman hired to work inside a seemingly perfect household that quickly reveals darker secrets.

Sweeney’s casting was confirmed alongside co-star Amanda Seyfried, who plays the volatile employer Nina Winchester, and Brandon Sklenar as Andrew Winchester, with Sweeney also serving as an executive producer on the project. Unfortunately for #BookTok fans, Sweeney’s involvement in the film could serve as a major deterrent. A study commissioned by <a href=”https://www.casino.ca/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Casino.ca shows how 50% of the 4,000 fans surveyed said that Sweeney’s casting makes them less likely to see the film. More than two in five respondents (42%) said that Sweeney’s political views influenced whether they wanted to see the movie.

Additionally, 50% of those surveyed said that they were worried about Millie getting miscast as Sweeney. Seyfried’s character, Nina, came in second with 27%. And 37% of fans said they worried that Hollywood would ruin the characters in The Housemaid.

Overall, 68% of the fans surveyed said they feel that they will be disappointed with the movie adaptation.

Sydney Sweeney says she’s ‘against hate’ after her controversial American Eagle campaign

Sydney Sweeney’s 2025 American Eagle “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans” ad campaign sparked widespread controversy when its wordplay on “genes” and “jeans,” combined with imagery of the blonde, blue-eyed star, led some critics to argue the messaging had uncomfortable racial undertones. While the campaign drove significant attention and even boosted American Eagle’s sales and impressions among key demographics, critics labeled it “tone-deaf.” They also accused it of unintentionally mimicking propaganda tropes, prompting broader cultural debates about advertising, aesthetics, and social sensitivity.

Sweeney was quiet about the ad backlash at first. However, she eventually stated that she’s “against hate.”

“I was honestly surprised by the reaction,” Sweeney told <a href=”https://people.com/sydney-sweeney-shares-emotional-response-to-american-eagle-jeans-campaign-exclusive-11863206″ target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>People. “I did it because I love the jeans and love the brand.” She added that she doesn’t “support the views some people chose to connect to the campaign. Many have assigned motives and labels to me that just aren’t true.”

“Anyone who knows me knows that I’m always trying to bring people together,” she continued. “I’m against hate and divisiveness.”

Fans online aren’t so sure about the actor’s involvement in ‘The Housemaid’

Aside from the #BookTok survey, fans on <a href=”https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/1po8qx7/removed_by_moderator/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Reddit also aren’t so sure how to feel about Sydney Sweeney’s casting in The Housemaid. Many felt like Sweeney could’ve done a better job in navigating the American Eagle backlash.

“I watched the PR stuff about Sydney Sweeney, and yeah, idk if I can get on board with someone who had a difficult time just flatly saying white supremacy is wrong when asked,” one fan commented. “The jeans ad backlash seemed a little far-fetched, but she was thrown softballs to clear the air, and it made me feel like the dog whistle allegations weren’t so exaggerated?”

That said, Sweeney found a friend in Amanda Seyfried. The costars told <a href=”https://people.com/amanda-seyfried-easy-to-support-sydney-sweeney-the-housemaid-bond-exclusive-11863094″ target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>People that they bonded while on set.

“It’s easy to support you,” Seyfried told Sweeney. “I also probably give way too much unsolicited advice, ‘This is what I would do.’”
