Tom Hanks Shares Wild Drink Combo on ‘The Late Show’ and Has Fans Buzzing

Tom Hanks is many things: two-time Oscar winner, beloved dad figure of the internet, and now… mixologist? On a recent appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” Hanks casually revealed a drink combo that instantly had fans raising eyebrows and glasses alike: a splash of champagne in a glass of Diet Coke.

Yep, you’ve read that right. Diet Coke. With champagne. And ice.

Reinventing Cocktails On Late-Night TV

“I’m not a big drinker. I don’t drink a lot,” Hanks said in the now-viral interview clip (seen below). “So I usually have… a little bit of caffeine, Diet Coke, in a glass, and I sip that in the night.” But when at a Holiday party, the actor changed his mind.

“They brought the champagne around. They brought the nice flutes. It was like the last episode of The Bachelor. You know, they were pouring all this stuff around. And I just had this Diet Coke.” Hanks explained.

His solution? “I said, oh, give me a shot of champagne in there for crying out loud.” 

“In the Diet Coke?” Colbert asks. “In the Diet Coke.” Hanks confirms, nodding. “And everybody said, ‘You are insane.’ I said, ‘Well, I may be insane, but I want to celebrate the season.’ So I had a sip of this. Stephen, it was delicious.”

Colbert, naturally, had to try it too, pulling out glasses filled with ice, Diet Coke, and a bottle of champagne. And after one sip? He mouths a quick “Wow!” and says, “That’s surprisingly good,” while laughing.

Fans on Instagram Had Thoughts

After “The Late Show” posted the clip to Instagram, the comments section turned into a party of its own.

“I’ve had Coke Spritz before but not quite like this.” one fan wrote. Another declared, “This has got to be my new celebration drink!” Champagne toast with a soda twist? Why not. Let’s be real: this is exactly the kind of fun, chaotic energy 2025 needs right now.

One viewer even came through with a business prediction: “That has just sold millions of bottles of champagne.”

And the culture shock? Chef’s kiss. “As a French gal, the most shocking thing to me in this scene is the ice cube with the champagne.”

But fans didn’t just focus on the drink… some people noticed the subtle shaking in Hanks’ hands as he poured the soda. One person commented, “tremor?” And another replied, “Having a tremor doesn’t mean you have Parkinson’s. It could be just Essential Tremor. Not fatal, just inconvenient and occasionally annoying.” Then they lightened things up by adding, “And the drink would be even better with Diet Pepsi!”
