‘Trading Spaces’ Left a Lasting Legacy
“Trading Spaces” premiered on TLC in October 2000. It made stars like Paige Davis, Ty Pennington, and Genevieve Gorder household names.
Throughout the show’s eight seasons, fans watched as two sets of neighbors were tasked with renovating one room in each other’s houses. With a budget of just $1000, two days to complete the project, and a shared carpenter, it became must-see TV.
“Trading Spaces changed the landscape of TV. We were the first design show to make home improvement fun. And because of that, we didnât just launch a new genre of television, we created a DIY boon,” Davis later explained to MPS Magazine in March 2018. “Of course, we had no idea weâd become such a loved part of pop cultureâwe just showed up to do two rooms in two days, and capture it all on camera. Itâs a ton of work, but we always have fun.”
In March 2017, TLC announced plans to revive the series, bringing back Davis as host. The format remained relatively unchanged, aside from the budget being doubled to $2000.
“We were fiercely protective of the original format,” she told the outlet. “I protect the integrity of the show like a mama bear. My husband always tells me to stay in my lane because Iâm not a producer, but we all fought for what we thought was authentic and true.”
The final episode aired in March 2019.
