I don’t doubt that Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce signed a prenup before their wedding. My guess is that prenup negotiations began soon after Travis’s proposal, and that neither party was offended. Everything we know about Taylor and her business sense indicates that she would protect her assets. Everything we know about Travis is that he’s well-managed and pretty smart about money. He’s worth about $90 million, and she’s worth $2 billion (probably more). So what does their prenup actually look like? Well, some random lawyer thinks that the financial part of the document is probably pretty cut-and-dry, but that Travis probably attached some kind of lyrical NDA to the prenup. As in, if they ever divorce, Taylor can’t write songs about him.
She has a reputation for dissing ex-lovers in songs with soulful but thinly veiled barbs shortly after break-ups. But heaven forbid Love Story singer Taylor Swift ever splits with Travis Kelce, because she might find that somewhat trickier in this case.
As the double-branded couple prepared for their over-the-top Madison Square Garden wedding in New York City, the attorneys were feverishly at work. And that means that their alleged celebrity prenup to end all prenups could potentially have a privacy clause that hampers the $2billion songstress from picking over the relationship in her lyrics, a top Manhattan divorce attorney has told the Daily Mail.
Any such quirky demand might be one of many in an expected 40-page document spelling out the individual wealth and expectations of America’s hottest couple as they seal their fortunes. Or, more romantically, get married – as they did on Friday, in a lavish ceremony officiated by comedian Adam Sandler. For despite being worth an estimated $90million, 36-year-old NFL legend Kelce’s money pot and earnings potential is severely outgunned by that of his new wife, who is the same age.
Top New York City divorce attorney and prenup expert Jacqueline Newman believes that despite some interesting wrinkles, the legalities of who has what after a split could be fairly straightforward. ‘I think the prenup is actually going to be a pretty simple document – what’s his right now will be his and what’s hers is hers,’ she said.
Newman, who specializes in ultra-high net worth divorces and matrimonial negotiations from her Manhattan office, continued: ‘If they put money into a joint asset using joint names, like a home, they’d both get back what they put in plus any appreciation.’
Experts believe the same degree of separation would go into future earnings, where Swift still has the potential to surpass those of her gargantuan 21-month Eras Tour whose 149 shows in five continents grossed $2.077billion in ticket sales. She also jealously guards her other intellectual property and paid a reported $360million to retrieve the masters of her first six albums.
So to the question of three-time Super Bowl winner Kelce getting a share of future earnings after any split, Newman said: ‘My guess is not. Unless they decide to do something together in some capacity. She values her output greatly and I believe there will be a very clear document that says what she creates in the future is hers. Similarly, he’s got creative things that he would obviously want to retain. I believe they will be very respectful.’
I agree with the guess/assessment that the financial stuff is pretty simple. I don’t even think Travis is a golddigger in the traditional sense – he sees the value of being WITH Taylor and being married to her. This isn’t some kind of pump-and-dump scheme where he’s looking to eventually get some kind of quick divorce settlement. He wants to build his brand side-by-side with Taylor and he’s clearly in it for the long-haul. All that being said, I hope he did add a clause to the prenup about Taylor’s song lyrics.
