Why Kate Middleton Refuses to Follow Her Late Mother-in-Law Princess Diana’s Favorite Fashion Rule

The Princess of Wales (formerly known as Kate Middleton) has paid tribute to the late Princess Diana on several occasions, but there’s one thing Prince William’s wife won’t do that his mother has no problem with.

Here’s what you won’t catch Kate wearing that her mother-in-law did and the reason behind that.

Kate stays away from what Diana wore often

There are plenty of rules and protocols about what to wear and when as a member of the royal family, but Princess Diana didn’t get the memo about wearing black when she chose a stunning floor-length gown in that color to wear to an event in 1981.

In her secretly recorded tapes to biographer Andrew Morton, Diana alleged that then-Prince Charles was furious when she wore the color and remarked: “Only people in mourning wear black!”

Diana continued to wear black when she wanted to over the years. However, her daughter-in-law, Kate, hasn’t followed in her footsteps when it comes to the LBD rule. Kate only wears black when mourning or attending a somber remembrance event. As <a href=”https://www.express.co.uk/news/royal/1969401/Princess-Diana-black-dress-Kate-Middleton” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Express noted, “Kate is firmly against wearing black unless she is dressed in full mourning attire or at memorial engagements.”

Another color you’d be hard-pressed to find Kate wearing these days is orange. She donned an orange-colored blouse underneath a white Alexander McQueen suit when she and William visited Jamaica in 2022 as well as a slightly more subdued orange knit dress. But up until that point, the princess steered clear of the color and only wore hues anywhere near the shade two other times since she’s been a working royal.

According to color analyst Gabriella Winters of Chromology U.K., Kate may steer clear of the color simply because she knows what looks best on her and orange just isn’t her favorite.

“I think the answer lies in DNA and Kate’s awareness of how certain colors [are] less flattering compared to other colors,” Winters told <a href=”https://www.hellomagazine.com/fashion/royal-style/2018081361122/why-kate-middleton-will-never-wear-orange/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Hello!. “People absorb and reflect the same colors differently depending on their unique biological makeup. When a color is placed adjacent to your face, it will reflect its wavelength onto you. Yellowish or greenish casts from too-warm colors are common, greyish or reddish casts from too-cool colors are also typical.”

Another rule set by a royal before her that Kate has no interest in adopting is <a href=”https://www.cheatsheet.com/tag/queen-elizabeth-ii/?swcfpc=1″ target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Queen Elizabeth II‘s favorite makeup rule.

The late queen had a preference for wearing bold and bright lip colors. She was regularly photographed over the years wearing either a red or a dark pink-red lip and was famously crowned wearing Clarins cosmetics after commissioning the company to create a red shade of lipstick that went with her coronation robes. Queen Elizabeth also loved similar hues by Elizabeth Arden. However, a bright lip isn’t something her granddaughter-in-law ever wears. Even in the early days of her relationship with Prince William, Kate stuck with nude or light pink shades.

Hannah, a make-up artist at Spectrum Collections, told <a href=”https://www.express.co.uk/news/royal/1824980/queen-elizabeth-make-up-princess-kate” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Express that Kate’s signature lip is all about natural shades over bold ones.

She explained: “Kate’s lips are always kept really subtle, often with a hint of a cool-toned pink to complement her skin tone.”
