A toddler has died and at least 39 others have been wounded in Memorial Day weekend shootings in Chicago from 5 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Tuesday.
Despite the violence — including a surge Monday night into early Tuesday that saw 14 people shot — the city appeared to be on track toward lowest number of fatal shootings in at least 16 years during Memorial Day weekend.
The sole death of the weekend — which runs from 5 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Tuesday — came after a toddler Jamonte Shaw, 2, fatally shot himself Sunday, according to Chicago police. A 31-year-old man was arrested, but no charges were announced.
At least eight of those wounded were in two mass shootings in Little Village and Austin.
A group of four were standing outside around 11 p.m. Monday in the 4800 block of West Fulton Street when someone opened fire, police said.
A 35-year-old man was shot in the back, a 34-year-old woman was wounded in the right thigh, a 27-year-old man was struck in the body and a 23-year-old man was shot in the left arm, police said.
They were all taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good conditions, officials said.
About an hour earlier, three teens were outside at a gathering in Hyde Park when they were reach struck by gunfire.
The teens, one 18-year-old man and two 19-year-olds, were wounded in the 1600 block of East 55th Street and went to the University of Chicago Medical Center where they were in good conditions, police said.
Around 6:20 p.m. Monday, a 47-year-old man was near the sidewalk in the 200 block of East 37th Street when he was battered and shot in the foot, authorities said. He went to Insight Hospital where his condition was stabilized.
Around 10:40 p.m. Sunday, a man driving a black sedan in the 4500 block of South Racine Avenue was shot in the chest and arm by someone inside an SUV, police said. He was taken to the University of Chicago in good condition.
On Sunday, four teenagers were injured in a single incident in Little Village, according to police. Police officers heard gunshots and found the four victims shot in the 2500 block of South Washtenaw Avenue at around 3 a.m. The victims told officers the gunman ran from the scene. No one has been arrested.
All four were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition: a 14-year-old boy shot in the arm, an 18-year-old woman shot in the buttocks, a 16-year-old girl was shot in the leg, and a second 16-year-old girl also shot in the leg.
About 15 minutes later, another shooting left multiple people injured. Three people suffering from gunshot wounds arrived together at Mount Sinai around 3:15 a.m. One of them was a 29-year-old man who was shot multiple times and is in critical condition, according to police.
The other two victims, a 30-year-old man and a 27-year-old man, were each shot in the leg and are in fair condition. The 30-year-old man was shot in the 2200 block of South Keeler Avenue in Little Village. Police have not released where the other two men were shot.
