1 killed, officer wounded in shooting at Northwest Indiana hotel

A person was killed and a police officer wounded in an exchange of gunfire Wednesday morning at a hotel in Northwest Indiana.

Chesterton, Indiana, police officers responded about 8 a.m. to the Hilton Garden, 501 Gateway Boulevard, after a call of a suspicious person at the hotel who was not a guest, according to Indiana State Police.

Officers confronted the person, who “at some point during the altercation” exchanged gunfire with officers, police said.

The person, whose identity wasn’t released, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The Porter County coroner’s office was scheduled to conduct an autopsy Thursday.

A Chesterton police officer suffered a gunshot wound and was taken to a hospital in Illinois, where he was treated for his injury and released, police said.

Indiana State Police detectives are investigating.
