14-year-old catches 30-inch walleye on Lake Michigan while coho fishing

Luke Efantis caught a 30-inch, 9-pound walleye Saturday while fishing for coho out of Portage, Indiana. The 14-year-old from Munster, Indiana, caught his surprise on a classic salmon lure, a pink Hot ‘N Tot.

“It was the only fish we caught today,” his dad Gust Efantis messaged.

That’s the fish to catch if you’re only getting one.

“He caught a couple walleye a few years back, but they were on a charter on Lake Erie and nowhere near this size, maybe 3-pounders,” Gust messaged.

I hope to live long enough to see both the Indiana and Illinois record walleye be caught from Lake Michigan.

FOTW, the celebration of big fish and their stories (the stories matter) around Chicago fishing, runs Wednesdays in the paper Sun-Times.
