Two men arrested Sunday are accused of starting a wildfire near Pagosa Springs with an illegal burn, sheriff’s officials said.
The 75-acre Oak fire destroyed five buildings and damaged one home after sparking on Aug. 10, according to the Archuleta County Sheriff’s Office.
Sergio Alaniz Jr., 41, and Ross Heirigs, 60, were both arrested Sunday on suspicion of multiple counts of fourth-degree arson, sheriff’s officials said.
The men allegedly violated fire restrictions and started an illegal burn at 152 Oak Drive, in Pagosa Springs’ Aspen Springs neighborhood, according to the sheriff’s office.
The wildfire sparked from a burn barrel at about 1:15 p.m. on Aug. 10 and quickly spread through the neighborhood, sheriff’s officials said.
Mandatory evacuations were lifted last week as crews worked to mop up the fire. It was 100% contained on Saturday, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.
