Two students suspected of possessing handguns while on the Northridge Middle School campus were arrested last week, according to school officials and a news media report.
School officials received a report of students in possession of handguns on Friday, May 3 and notified authorities, a Los Angeles Unified spokesperson said in a message to the families. The handguns were found during a search of the campus.
“As a reminder, students should not bring any dangerous items to school or other non-permitted items, including items that may resemble or imitate a dangerous object,” the statement said. “This is an opportunity for parents and guardians to discuss with their children the importance of using good judgment and avoiding dangerous activities.”
The Los Angeles Unified School District and Los Angeles School Police Department did not say how many students were involved or provide information on the handguns, including whether they were replicas, or if they were loaded.
Fox 11, using an unnamed source, reported that two boys were arrested on suspicion of carrying a 9 mm ghost gun and a 9 mm Glock.
Extra police patrols and on-campus support were made available to students on Monday.
