2 people shot at Walmart in Evergreen Park; gunman arrested, police say

A gunman was arrested after firing shots inside of a Walmart and injuring two people Wednesday afternoon in suburban Evergreen Park, according to police.

The gunman exited a gray Hyundai that pulled up in front of the store at 2500 W. 95th St. around 3 p.m. and chased a man inside, Evergreen Park Police Chief Michael Saunders told reporters at the scene.

Inside the store, the gunman fired multiple shots and hit the other man, 23, in his leg, Saunders said. The victim suffered “severe blood loss” and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

A 70-year-old woman was outside the store’s front doors when one of the shots from inside struck her in her foot, Saunders said. She was taken in good condition to Little Company of Mary Hospital.

The gunman then ran through the store and exited out of a back door, Saunders said. He was found about 15 minutes later in a resident’s yard in the 9300 block of Country Club Drive and was taken into custody.

When police arrived to the store, they found the woman lying outside. Officers recovered a gun inside, Saunders said.

The car in which the gunman arrived was later found by Chicago police in the 800 block of West Marquette Road, according to Evergreen Park police. The occupants in the car were taken to the Evergreen Park Police Department but no arrests were reported.

After the shooting, the store was closed and police taped off the store’s parking lot.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Evergreen Park police at (708) 422-2144.
