Two teens were shot, one fatally, at a bus stop in Woodlawn Wednesday afternoon, according to Chicago police.
The teens, a boy and girl, both 16, were at a bus stop in the 6300 block of South Stony Island Avenue at 3:23 p.m. when a person approached and opened fire, police said. The boy was hit multiple times and taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition; he later died.
He was identified as Eric Billups by the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
The girl was shot in her left leg and also taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in fair condition, police said. No one is in custody.
Chicago Police Supt. Larry Snelling addressed recent incidents of violence involving young people during a hearing on the federal consent decree Tuesday.
“We have young kids who are now taking to the streets, not only in Chicago but across the country … and they’re engaging in activity that has led to violence,” Snelling said.
Snelling said the police department had seen “more CPS students shot and killed this year than we have in the past 10 years, possibly.” According to Chicago Police Department homicide data, 2026 is on track to see the third consecutive year in which youth homicides have fallen by mid-April with 13.
The city saw 13 youth homicides by this point in the year in 2019 and 2020, though that number nearly doubled in 2023, reaching 24. The tally for the same time period dropped in 2024 and has continued to decline since. Annually, youth homicides have also been declining for several years.
