7 people in boat off Newport Beach suspected of being in U.S. illegally picked up by Coast Guard

Seven people suspected of being in the country illegally were taken into federal custody Saturday, Aug. 16, off the coast of Newport Beach.

Officials with the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach received a report around 9 p.m. requesting a boarding after a patrol of a 20-foot ship with seven people aboard, according to the Coast Guard.

Coast Guard officials identified five men and two women whom they believed to be undocumented immigrants on the boat. Officials said three of the people were confirmed to be Mexican nationals, and they suspect the other four are Mexican nationals. The group didn’t report injuries or medical concerns, the Coast Guard said.

Officials also noticed flooding in the bilge and secured the source before towing the vessel.

The seven people and the boat were transferred to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
