USS Hornet to unveil new aircraft in its collection April 26

The USS Hornet Sea, Air & Space Museum on April 26 will officially unveil a new aircraft in its collection: The F/A-18C Hornet. This aircraft from the Pensacola National Naval Aviation Museum will arrive at Oakland International Airport shortly before this event, brought aboard the USS Hornet, reassembled and put on display. The unveiling event will also feature special guest speakers.

The F/A-18C Hornet is of special importance to the Hornet as it carries on the proud U.S. navy legacy of the name Hornet that stretches all the way back to the first USS Hornet during the American Revolutionary War. This F/A-18C was one of two VFA-81 Sunliners that shot down a pair of MIG-21 Fishbeds on Jan. 17, 1991, the first day of Operation Desert Storm. The pilot that day was Capt. Nick “Mongo” Mongillo, USN (ret.).

The Hornet museum will mark the unveiling occasion by thanking the donors who made this possible, especially the Hornet’s own docents who led the fundraising charge to bring this amazing aircraft aboard. For more information, visit uss-hornet.org/event/f-18-hornet-unveiling.
