A baby girl died after a boy threw her to the floor in a Claremont home on Monday, June 29, police said.
Paramedics transported the infant to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center for emergency treatment after police officers and other first responders arrived around 11:40 a.m. to the home in the 1400 block of Lynoak Drive, Claremont police said in a news release.
Because of the severity of her injuries, the baby was transferred to Children’s Hospital of Orange County, where she died.
Officers took a boy into custody and booked him on suspicion of murder. Investigators believe the boy threw the infant to the floor, according to the release.
There were other adults in the home at the time, and an adult who wasn’t related to the baby discovered her, said Claremont police Lt. Brian Thompson.
The boy knew the baby, but they weren’t related, Thompson said. Police wouldn’t further specify their relationship or if there were other children in the home, but Thompson said Child Protective Services had not been involved following the infant’s death.
The boy is being held at Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall and is scheduled to be arraigned on Thursday, July 2.
The investigation is ongoing. Police didn’t disclose the age of the boy or the baby and said a motive in the killing remains under investigation.
