Beach hazards statement affecting Los Angeles County beaches from Sunday to Wednesday

Catalina/Santa Barbara Islands, Malibu, Los Angeles County Beaches and Ventura County Beaches are under a beach hazards statement which was released by the National Weather Service on Friday at 10:44 a.m. The statement is valid from Sunday 6 a.m. until Wednesday Oct. 1, at 6 p.m.

The NWS Los Angeles/Oxnard CA said, “Dangerous rip currents and breaking waves due to elevated surf expected on south-facing beaches. Surf of 4 to 6 feet with local max sets to 7 feet will be possible.”

“There is an increased risk of ocean drowning. Rip currents can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea. Waves can wash people off beaches and rocks, and capsize small boats nearshore,” the NWS said. “Remain out of the water due to hazardous swimming conditions, or stay near occupied lifeguard towers. Rock jetties can be deadly in such conditions, stay off the rocks.”
