Beach hazards statement affecting Los Angeles County beaches until early Friday
Catalina/Santa Barbara Islands, Malibu, Los Angeles County Beaches and Ventura County Beaches are included in a beach hazards statement released by the National Weather Service on Tuesday at 1:34 p.m. The statement is valid from 11 p.m. until Friday Sept. 11, at midnight.
“Dangerous and potentially life threatening rip currents and breaking waves due to elevated surf expected,” according to the NWS Los Angeles/Oxnard CA. “High tides near 7 feet will occur each evening between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m.”
“There is an increased risk of ocean drowning. Rip currents will be widespread and very strong, potentially pulling swimmers and surfers out to sea. Waves can wash people off beaches and rocks. Pooling of sea water is possible around high tide at beach areas that is uncommon with normal tidal ranges. Enhanced beach erosion is also possible. Highest impact potential is tonight, with more minor impacts Wednesday through Thursday,” the NWS said. “Take the necessary actions to protect flood-prone property. Do NOT drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions, or stay near occupied lifeguard towers. Rock jetties can be deadly in such conditions, stay off the rocks.”
