SANTA CLARA, Calif. — After the Bears lost 42-38 to the 49ers on Sunday night, cornerback C.J. Gardner-Johnson went on social media to decry what he called a “BS call” against him in the second quarter.
Gardner-Johnson intercepted Brock Purdy’s pass in the second quarter with the game tied at 21. The pick came back, though, when Gardner-Johnson was called for illegal use of hands when he made contact with receiver Ricky Pearsall. That gave the 49ers the ball at the Bears’ 3. The 49ers scored two plays later on a three-yard Purdy run.
A game that was short on defense featured one Bears takeaway — an interception by linebacker T.J. Edwards on the 49ers’ first offensive play that he returned for a 34-yard touchdown.
The Bears allowed the 49ers to score six touchdowns. They punted only twice. Entering the game, the 49ers hadn’t punted since Nov. 30.
He was helped off the field after the final gun.
