The Bears need help in their pass rush, whether that improvement comes from within or by adding talent over the next two months. While general manager Ryan Poles said the team will look at all options in free agency, it sounds unlikely that veteran defensive end Cam Jordan will be part of that equation.
Jordan has played his entire 15-year career with the Saints, including 10 seasons when Bears defensive coordinator Dennis Allen was on staff, and is weighing his future as a free agent. He indicated last month he is interested in returning to the Saints or signing elsewhere rather than retiring.
Allen raved about Jordan on Saturday before the Bears rookie minicamp practice, but implied it was unlikely he’d be joining the Bears.
“My experience with him was outstanding,” Allen said. “Cam’s going to be a frickin Hall of Fame player, is a Hall of Fame player. I don’t know that there’s been a ton of discussion about [signing him]. We feel pretty good about where we’re at and what we have. And yet, you never know what opportunities might present themselves down the road.”
Jordan turns 37 this summer, but remains one of the most talented and durable pass rushers in the NFL. He had 10 1/2 sacks for the Saints last season and has never missed more than one game in a season. He is 17th all-time and second among active players with 132 career sacks. He is an eight-time Pro Bowl selection, though he hasn’t been picked for one since 2022.
The Bears had just 35 sacks last season, seventh-fewest in the league. Defensive end Montez Sweat led them with 10, followed by defensive tackle Gervon Dexter with six and defensive end Austin Booker at 4 1/2.
