Bears linebacker D’Marco Jackson was named NFC Defensive Player of the Week on Wednesday, three days after he intercepted his first career pass and recorded a sack in the 31-3 win against the Browns.
He’s the only NFC player this year to record at least seven tackles, two pass deflections, one sack and one interception in the same game.
The first Bears linebacker to win the award since Danny Trevathan seven years ago, Jackson might not even start Saturday against the Packers. The Bears brought Tremaine Edmunds back to practice this week and could bring him off injured reserve before kickoff Saturday. He’s missed the minimum four games required of an IR stint after hurting his groin last month.
The Bears claimed Jackson off waivers at the end of training camp with hopes of him being a special teams stalwart. He’d played under defensive coordinator Dennis Allen.
“I knew that was a guy that we wanted to try to target to get in here and see if we could, you know, work with him … ” Allen said.” I knew what was inside his heart. You know, in terms of the type of person he was, in terms of the type of worker he was, in terms of how he was going to fit into the locker room. There was no question about that.
“And so, and I think like with a lot of young players, sometimes it takes some time to develop. But if you keep working at it, you know, and you’re smart, you’ll work at it, you got some athletic ability, you end up getting better.”
