The Bears’ practice Thursday will provide another chance for the team to figure out exactly who they want to start at left tackle.
The three-man starting left tackle competition took on a fourth player Wednesday when Theo Benedet rotated with veteran Braxton Jones. Rookie Ozzy Trapilo, meanwhile, played second-string right tackle behind Darnell Wright.
Trapilo, who played half the team’s snaps at left tackle on Sunday, hasn’t been eliminated from the running. Rather, offensive line coach Dan Roushar said before practice the Bears wanted to get Trapilo some work at right tackle.
Benedet, an undrafted free agent from Canada a year ago, is probably best-known for singing “God Bless the USA” in a Speedo on “Hard Knocks” last year. Roushar, though, said he’s improved more than anyone else in his room. He split first-team reps Wednesday with Jones, who started Sunday and played 32% of the team’s snaps at left tackle.
“[Benedet] has put himself in a position to go compete for a job somewhere in this group,” he said.
Second-year player Kiran Amegadjie is part the competition, too, but he appears to be on the outside looking in. He missed time with a leg injury before returning to practice Monday.
That group includes veteran backup quarterback Case Keenum, who is competing for a roster spot while also mentoring the young quarterback.
