Bears morning report: Some separation in the left tackle battle

After an off day Tuesday, the Bears will practice three days in a row. Perhaps by the end of the week they’ll have even greater clarity at left tackle.

As it is, the Bears’ two left tackles are “starting to separate themselves from each other,” offensive coordinator Declan Doyle said Monday, even though they’re “still very much in a battle” for the starting job.

Braxton Jones, the fourth-year player, started and got 32% of the team’s snaps at left tackle Sunday against the Dolphins. Ozzy Trapilo took his place and played 50% of their snaps.

“I would say that both of them, there’s a lot of room for improvement …” Doyle said after watching Sunday’s film. “Really, it’s about who’s willing to make improvement on that performance, and keep accelerating to see who’s gonna be the guy there Week 1.”

Jones was beat badly on the Bears’ fourth-and-goal touchdown pass from the 4 and came out of the game immediately afterward. Doyle said that was part of the plan and not punishment.

“The tape doesn’t lie,” Doyle said. “It will become clearer and clearer as time goes on that one of those guys is going to separate themselves – in the eyes of the decision makers, of Ben (Johnson), of our front office, of the O-line coaches, of myself. But incomplete evaluation thus far. We still a lot of football left to play.”

Kiran Amegadjie has been out with a leg injury, but returned for Monday’s practice. He’s behind the other two starting candidates.

“I just let people be and let them speak,” Fields said after a joint practice with the Giants on Tuesday. “That’s not going to affect me whatsoever.” But it used to, he acknowledged.
