Bears report: RB Kyle Monangai won’t play vs. Falcons

What happened at Halas Hall on Friday:

Monangai out

Bears running back Kyle Monangai will miss another game Sunday. After not practicing for the second-straight week because of turf toe, he was ruled out.

Coach Ben Johnson said he remains “week-to-week,” meaning the Bears viewed the injury as keeping him out for four games or less.

“As far as I know, he’s trending in the right direction,” he said.

The Bears also ruled out linebacker TJ Edwards (hamstring), defensive end Dayo Odeyingbo (quad) and linebacker Keyshaun Elliott (quad). Cornerback Tyrique Stevenson (hip) is questionable.

Johnson praised Edwards’ poise as the player takes the calls from coordinator Dennis Allen and relays them in the huddle.

“You miss a guy like TJ,” he said. “He’s been a ‘Steady Eddie’ and he’s played really dependable football really through his tenure here.”

Gordon on Sunday?

The Bears will activate slot cornerback Kyler Gordon before Oct. 20, which is when his return-to-play window closes.

They’d have to make the move Saturday for him to play Sunday. Gordon practiced in full all week but the Bears called him questionable.

“He’s done a great job taking everything that we’ve assigned him so far,” Johnson said. “I feel good about him, whether that’s this week or next week.”

Trapilo close

Johnson said tackle Ozzy Trapilo is “really close” to returning to game action for the first time since he tore his patellar tendon in the Bears’ playoff win against the Packers. Trapilo was the Bears’ starter when he got hurt but it’s likely the team will start Theo Benedet at left tackle while he gets accustomed to playing.
