Desperate for help at safety after Coby Bryant hurt his left knee earlier this week, the Bears signed Xavier Woods to a one-year deal Friday.
Woods certainly has the experience — he’s started a whopping 121 games in nine NFL seasons. He was drafted by the Cowboys in Round 6 in 2017, playing for four seasons before signing with the Vikings in 2021. After one season in Minnesota, he played three years in Carolina and one in Tennessee. He had two interceptions in 10 starts with the Titans last year. Just two seasons ago, he played every single down for the Panthers.
He has 15 career picks.
Injuries have piled up at the position during training camp. Bryant’s injury will keep him out 8-10 weeks. Elijah Hicks began training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list because of shin issues. Gervarrius Owens was carted off the field Thursday after hurting his leg during a punt drill. Cam Lewis, who had been filling in for the injured Kyler Gordon at slot corner, moved to Bryant’s position, where he has been paired with Dillon Thieneman, the Bears’ first-round pick.
Woods, 31, mostly has played free safety during his career.
To make room, the Bears put cornerback Dallis Flowers on injured reserve. He left practice Thursday.
