Breaking down the Bears’ training-camp practice Sunday:
What happened
About half the team practiced for an hour at Halas Hall. Those who played significant snaps in the preseason opener Saturday against the Browns were given the day off.
While running back Kyle Monangai’s injury put a damper on practice, the Bears did get some good news: Defensive end Montez Sweat participated for the first time since leaving the field with an injury Aug. 6. Left tackle Braxton Jones, who was hurt the same day, practiced more than he had since his own return.
The offense wasn’t particularly sharp. With the offense trailing 20-17 at the end of practice, quarterback Caleb Williams threw incomplete into the end zone when a touchdown would have won the game.
Edge help coming?
Free-agent defensive end Marcus Davenport, a former first-round draft pick, visited the Bears. For a team that added no relevant pass rushers this offseason, Davenport is a big name. Still, he has only four sacks in the last four seasons after posting nine in 2021.
Davenport knows the Bears and vice versa. He played for defensive coordinator Dennis Allen with the Saints in 2018-22. After a season with the Vikings, he played two with the Lions. Bears coach Ben Johnson worked on the Lions’ staff in 2024.
Davenport started seven games for the Lions last season but wasn’t particularly effective. Pro Football Focus ranked him 103rd out of 115 qualified edge rushers.
The Saints drafted him 14th overall in 2018.
What’s next?
The Bears have Monday off.
