Breaking down the Bears’ Wednesday training camp practice:
What happened
As he does on the first day of every training camp, defensive coordinator Dennis Allen put all his healthy players through 40 up-downs Wednesday. Safety Coby Bryant planned on telling Allen they were too easy.
“It’s a mindset thing,” Bryant said. “We’re going to deal with way harder stuff than 40 up-downs.”
The practice was, by Collective Bargaining Agreement mandate, light — about one hour and 15 minutes. The highlight came when, during a long special teams period, second-year receiver Luther Burden caught a punt with his left arm — and then, without dropping the first ball, caught the next one with his right.
Later, punter Tory Taylor drew a few gasps when he booted a knuckleball that landed inside the 5-yard line and bounced perfectly sideways.
Position Battle Watch
With Kyler Gordon out with a calf injury, cornerback Jaylon Jones and cornerback/safety Cam Lewis took snaps in the slot. As was the case in the spring, Braxton Jones functioned as the first-team left tackle.
Injury report
Every player who was not identified as injured on Tuesday practiced Wednesday.
What’s next
The Bears will practice at 8:30 a.m. Thursday. There will be no fans in attendance.
