Bears WR Luther Burden’s groin injury expected to keep him out this preseason: report

Luther Burden’s groin injury is expected to keep him out for the rest of the preseason, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Monday.

The Bears receiver limped off the field during practice Saturday after leaping for a pass in the end zone during a one-on-one drill against cornerback Tyrique Stevenson. He did not practice Sunday. The Bears start their season Sept. 13 at the Panthers, and hope to have Burden with them.

Until then, the Bears will give extra snaps to Jahdae Walker and rookie Zavion Thomas, both who are locks to make the team. Lesser-known receivers having strong camps include Kaden Davis and J.P. Richardson. They figure to play a lot in the Bears’ first preseason game Saturday against the Browns at Soldier Field. Coach Ben Johnson doesn’t seem likely to play his starters much, if at all.

Burden’s absence, though, is a blow for an offense trying to make a leap in Year 2 under Johnson. Burden has been a trendy pick this offseason, both inside and outside Halas Hall, to emerge as a star. Johnson said in June that “I’m buying Luther Burden stock right now,” while general manager Ryan Poles said in July that “if there’s a guy I’m really excited about, it’s Luther Burden.”

Burden had 47 catches on 60 targets for 652 yards and two touchdowns last year. In the last three weeks of the regular season alone, he caught 17 passes for 257 yards.
