South Metro Fire Rescue crews responded to a water rescue at Chatfield State Park in Littleton around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to a post from the fire department on social media.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers and Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies also responded to the water rescue, the fire department said.

Around 9:15 a.m., the water rescue turned into a body recovery and death investigation after a man was spotted face-down in the water, according to a statement from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. The cause of death is unknown at this time.

“It’s too early to tell,” sheriff’s office spokesperson Jacki Kelley said. “We don’t know what we have yet.”
