His body was recovered from the coral reef in Fiji the next day.
Christian’s mother Diane said her son was ‘a beautiful boy’ who was “hard working, fit, active and well groomed” whose dream was to work on super yachts.
He worked on several yachts in France before a chance meeting with an Australian guest at a hotel in Newquay who offered to put him in Australia.
A post mortem found he had been stung by sea urchins but they were not toxic enough to kill.
But pathologist Dr Tim Bracey said Christian, of Newquay, Cornwall, may have then struggled in the warm, clear water.
The deckhand was with crewmates at a beach in Nadi when he died.
Coroner Emma Hillson noted he had previously suffered from seizures.
She said the toxicity of the sea urchin stings were not enough to have caused his death and that, on the balance of probabilities, he drowned due to a seizure.
Verdict: Accident.
