A 76-year-old man has been killed in a swimming incident while on holiday in Greece, it has been reported.

The tourist, believed to be from Britain, was visiting the island of Kalymnos, next to the Turkish mainland.

Joined by his wife, he travelled by boat from the nearby island Kos to the south of Kalymnos as part of a coastal tour.

Local media reported that the pair were swimming in the water near the port of Vathi when the incident happened.

The pensioner was taken by the coastguard to the port where he was pronounced dead at hospital.

But it was not immediately clear what caused his death.

The victim has not been named and authorities are yet to release further details about the moments leading up to his death.

Kalymnos, a tiny island in the Dodecanese group, is a popular destination for tourists in Greece for how cheap it is compared to Turkey, Spain and Portugal.

The incident comes a month after another British tourist drowned in the Turkish Mediterranean resort town of Marmaris, which is located some 60 miles from the island.
