A British woman has been killed after a tornado caused by Storm Claudia ripped through a town in Portugal.

The 85-year-old, who has not been named publicly, was initially reported missing and later found dead in the wreckage of a destroyed campsite in Albufeira.

Portuguese president Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed his ‘solidarity with the family of the victim who died as a result of the storm’s passage this morning in Albufeira’.

Another 28 people have been injured – including two seriously – because of shattered glass, local officials said.

Those wounded were of Portuguese, Spanish and British nationalities and ranged in age from six to 85 years old.

Footage circulating on social media show the deadly winds swept through the campsite.

Rui Cristina, mayor of Albufeira, described the aftermath of the tornado as ‘truly heartbreaking’.

In a post on Facebook, he said: ‘There is a record of several injured and one fatal victim, aged 85 of British nationality. On behalf of myself and the municipality, I express my deepest condolences to the family and friends.

‘We are working with all municipal means and civil protection entities to support victims and restore conditions of safety and normality as quickly as possible.’
